Message from the Headmaster

Dear Parents, Friends and Colleagues,

Welcome to our website. We hope that we offer most of the information you require and in particular, help parents make the all-important decision as to, "Is this the right school for our child(ren)?" In reality your final decision will be made when you actually come to visit us. All parents are experts at getting 'the feel' of a school as soon as they walk through the door and more often than not, that initial feeling is the right one.

Some facts:-
  • Established in 1991, Clavis is the only International Baccalaureate Primary School on the island, offering the IB’s Primary Years Programme (IB PYP). Our classes range from Pre-Reception (3/4-year olds) to Year 6 (10/11-year olds). We were authorized in 2002 and have completed one IB evaluation visit in October 2005. Our next evaluation visit(s) will be in October 2010 and every 5 years thereafter.
  • The IB PYP has been implemented at Clavis since 1998 and the school invests hugely in training its staff, by either arranging for qualified IB PYP trainers to work with all the staff at Clavis each year, or by sending individuals or groups of teachers abroad for specific IB PYP courses. Miss Amanda Jones, our PYP Coordinator, works at the school to develop and monitor the programme and provide staff professional development.
  • Pupils are predominantly Mauritian, but we also have a varied mix of children from other schools around the world - including Africa, China, Colombia, Finland, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, South Africa, Sri Lanka, UK and the USA. Children from Clavis have also moved on to be successfully integrated into other academic programmes either locally or abroad, including IB PYP schools in Washington DC, Toronto and Beijing.
  • Our approach to language is commended by the IB, in their last report on the school, for actively developing bilingual children (English and French).
  • The student/teacher ratio is extremely favourable, with a teaching staff of 50 members for just over 450 children, with between 15 to 25 pupils in each class, depending on the Year Group.
  • Our school year follows the southern hemisphere seasonal calendar, running from January to November, usually with a 3-week break at Easter and a 4-week holiday from the end of July to the end of August.
Please contact us if you would like to arrange a visit and it will be our pleasure to show you around the school.

Yours faithfully,
